The Problem of False Hope

Firstly, you need to think about whether either one of you is harbouring some kind of false hope. Perhaps you want to remain contact so that you can be friends, but often at the end of a relationship you’ll find that at least one person wants to get back together. Either way, keeping in strong contact could really keep this false hope going. If you do really care for each other and want to stay in contact, then try to have a frank and honest discussion with one another about whether it’s over for good or not.

How Long Should You Wait?

Sometimes it can take time before talking is a good idea, and most break up relationship advice will say you should avoid talking to each other in the immediate aftermath of the break up. I know that this is hard to do, but it is usually ultimately going to be the best option if you really want things to work in the long run. This is good even for couples who are hoping to get back together eventually. This gives you time to help clear your head, and understand the real ins and outs of making up if that’s what you want to do.

Seeing Other People

If you’re not going to get back together then there’s a real possibility that, sooner or later, you will start to see other people. But if you are still in regular contact with your ex, this can be a very difficult and upsetting time. It can hold you back, or make you feel back if your ex is moving on quicker than you are. Think long and hard about this – can you really cope with talking to each other about your new relationships?

All in all, no break up relationship advice is going to give you a solid answer – you need to figure out what’s best for yourself.
